Activity: Does the world of art and design interest you? Keen to learn about aspects of art history? Curious about what makes artists tick? Our Arts Society for West Gloucestershire is the friendly organisation which can give you answers!
On the second Thursday of most months we meet at 2 p.m. in the afternoon at the modern Highnam Community Centre where we provide a high-quality hour-long presentation from lecturers with national - sometimes international - reputations. The focus might be upon an individual painter, art collections, historic buildings or artistic movements - it’s a broad range. In fact, we are part of the national charitable Arts Society network which recruits these outstanding lecturers. Not only that, they also monitor their ongoing performance closely so that the highest quality is maintained.Selected from a huge range of possible subjects, this spring, 2020, we’ll be examining the life of John Singer Sargent; we will consider the mystery behind Holbein’s “Ambassadors” and be introduced to the contents of the New York Frick Collection, one of the finest museums in the world. Each year we also mount a couple of longer Special Interest Days. So, in November, we listened to a specialist on Chinese art; and a forthcoming history of Cordoba, Seville and Granada is already a sell-out! Every year our society organises visits to places of historic or artistic interest. Last October saw us at the Morgan car factory in Malvern; and modern car design will be balanced this June by a trip to historic Hellens Manor in Much Marcle, described as “the jewel in the crown of Herefordshire homes”.
So, if you want to find out more about us, do go to our website ( ) which will give you more detail and information on contacting us. Membership for the year costs only £46. A reduced subscription running to 31 July 2020 of £36 is now available.Alternatively, just come along to one of our lectures as a guest to get a sample of the sort of presentations we provide. You will be most welcome!
